Rippling's Benefits Marketplace is transforming this experience by bringing benefits discovery, enrollment, administration, and carrier integrations into a unified platform. We're building highly scalable systems that connect employers, employees, insurance carriers, and benefits providers while automating complex workflows across the employee lifecycle. The team operates at the intersection of product engineering, distributed systems, marketplace infrastructure, and complex integrations, solving challenging problems around data consistency, scalability, reliability, and automation. About the Role We're looking for a Senior Engineering Manager to lead and scale a high-performing engineering team within Benefits Marketplace. This is a high-ownership role combining deep technical leadership, product development, and people management. You'll drive the architecture and execution of critical systems, influence product direction, and help shape the future of Rippling's Benefits platform. You'll work on complex engineering challenges involving distributed systems, carrier integrations, asynchronous workflows, and business-critical transactions. We're looking for someone with a strong product-building mindset, exceptional technical judgment, and a proven ability to develop engineers and deliver complex products at scale. You'll be expected to remain close to the technology, challenge architectural decisions, drive execution, and build a culture of engineering excellence. What You Will Do Lead and grow a high-performing engineering team, attracting, mentoring, and developing exceptional engineering talent. Own the technical strategy, architecture, and execution of critical Benefits Marketplace products and services. Build scalable, reliable backend systems supporting benefits enrollment, eligibility, carrier integrations, and complex business workflows. Drive architectural decisions involving distributed systems, APIs, asynchronous processing, data consistency, and fault tolerance. Partner with Product, Design, Platform, and senior engineering leaders to define roadmaps and translate ambiguous business problems into scalable solutions. Stay technically engaged through system design reviews, architectural discussions, critical code reviews, and production troubleshooting. Lead end-to-end product development, balancing execution velocity, engineering quality, and long-term scalability. Build a culture of strong ownership, accountability, technical excellence, and continuous improvement. What You Will Need 12-17 years of software engineering experience, including 5+ years of engineering management experience. Strong technical foundation in backend engineering, distributed systems, system design, and scalable architecture. Proven experience building and scaling complex, customer-facing products from conception to production. Strong coding and architectural expertise in languages such as Java, Python, Go, C++, Scala, or equivalent. Demonstrated ability to lead high-performing engineering teams, develop senior engineers, and maintain a high technical bar. Strong product mindset with the ability to translate customer and business needs into technical strategy and execution. Experience driving engineering roadmaps, setting priorities, managing dependencies, and delivering complex initiatives. Ability to operate in ambiguous environments, make sound technical trade-offs, and influence decisions across teams. Strong collaboration and communication skills, with experience working across global engineering and product organizations. Experience building marketplace platforms, enterprise SaaS, fintech, or integration-heavy products is a plus.
