Requirements

Candidates must hold a PhD or a Master's degree with at least 4 years of experience in a quantitative field such as neuroscience or neural engineering. Strong proficiency in Python, neural signal processing, and applied machine learning is required, along with experience analyzing continuous neural time-series data.

Responsibilities

The Senior Data Scientist will own the end-to-end analysis of research studies, including statistical design, signal validation, and the development of decoding models. They will build reproducible analysis pipelines and collaborate with scientists and engineers to translate neural data into actionable insights.

About the role

About Us Epia Neuro is a neural technology company developing intent-driven systems designed to restore function and independence for people living with neurological conditions. Its platform integrates implantable neural interfaces, adaptive algorithms, and assistive devices to translate neural intent into real-world action. The company's initial focus is stroke-related motor impairment, with expansion into cognitive decline and other neurological disorders. The Role We are generating neural and behavioral data at an increasing pace, across preclinical and early human research studies, with clinical studies ahead. We are looking for a neural data scientist to turn that data into rigorous answers. This ranges from characterizing signal quality and decoding performance to exploring what else our data can tell us, such as which movements and behaviors we can extract and decode. You will design and carry out the analyses and build the analysis workflows that let us do this reliably as our data grows. This is a hands-on, individual contributor data scientist role on our Research team, reporting to the Director of Research. You will work alongside the scientists running our studies, and your work will shape study design, inform our decoding approaches, and contribute to publications. You will also partner closely with our Software team, which owns production code and the software infrastructure used in our studies. What You'll Do Own the analysis of our research studies end to end, from analysis strategy and statistical design through figures, readouts, and publications. Characterize and validate the in vivo recording performance of our neural interface (signal quality, noise, artifacts, and stability), and establish the preprocessing and quality control that downstream analyses depend on. Develop and evaluate decoding models that relate neural activity to behavior, including those used in closed-loop study sessions. Explore neural and behavioral data, including pose estimation and kinematics, to identify new variables and questions worth pursuing. Build reproducible analysis pipelines and help define data standards across studies. Work closely with study scientists to shape analysis plans and study design, communicate findings clearly to scientists, engineers, and leadership, and partner with our Software team to hand off research-grade methods and code. Qualifications PhD in neuroscience, neural engineering, biomedical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, or a related quantitative field, or a Master's degree in one of these fields with 4+ years of relevant experience in a research-focused role. Substantial hands-on experience analyzing continuous neural time-series data, ideally field potentials such as ECoG, sEEG, LFP, or EEG. A strong foundation in neural signal processing, including filtering, spectral analysis (such as band power and time-frequency methods), artifact handling, and feature extraction. A solid applied machine learning background, including both supervised and unsupervised methods, particularly with noisy biological data. Demonstrated ability to independently frame scientific questions, select and defend appropriate methods, and carry analyses through to clear conclusions and actionable recommendations. Experience aligning neural recordings with behavioral and task data. Strong Python and scientific computing skills, with a track record of writing reusable, maintainable analysis code and using version control and sound data management practices. Clear written and verbal communication, and comfort working across scientific and engineering teams. Nice to Have Experience with human intracranial recordings. Experience with motor decoding, cognitive-state decoding, or closed-loop BCI. Experience with video-based pose estimation or kinematic analysis. Experience building data pipelines or standards shared across studies. Experience with cloud-based data processing. How We Work We are intentional. We prioritize and are thoughtful about how we use others' time. We care for others. We prioritize safety both for patients and one another. We own outcomes, not just tasks. Our work demands the highest standards because it impacts real patients and real lives. Humility is a strength. We are honest about what we know and what we don't know. Getting it right matters more than being right. Location This role is based out of the San Francisco Bay Area and is expected to work on site from our Alameda headquarters at least 3 days a week. Benefits Full-time employees are eligible for the following benefits: Competitive base salary with equity 100% of healthcare coverage for you and your dependents Generous vacation policy Paid parental leave Work from our waterfront office in Alameda, CA, with access to collaborative spaces and labs
